Hazy morning landscape in SwietokrzyskieThe Swietokrzyskie Voivodeship, the second smallest of the 16 Voivodeship that make up Poland, is situated in the south east of Poland and takes its name from the Swietokrzyskie mountain range within it. Its capital city, Kielce, is the home of Polish hip-hop music and is the only city in the country with a statue of Miles Davis, which stands at over 2metres in the square in front of the Cultural Centre. As well as its musical interests, Kielce is also a centre of geological interest and has such attractions as a fossilized sea bed complete with corals and shellfish in Kadzielnia and the Jurassic Park in Baltów which houses several dinosaurs and fossilized footprints for the travelling archaeology enthusiast.

Another site of geological interest is the ‘Pepper’ mountains which lie near Sandomierz and are believed to be the oldest mountain range in Europe at approximately 500 million years old. The Mountain range that the region takes its name from, the SwietokrzyskieMountains, although not as old, are nonetheless a stunning sight of slopes covered with fir forests and crumbling rocks.

The Swietokrzyskie Voivodeship is also home to the majestic ruins of Krzyżtopór castle in Ujazd, which is believed to date back as far as 1621, although an exact date is unknown, and was partially destroyed during the Swedish invasion of 1655 and turned to ruin by the Russians during the Bar Confederacy in 1770. Although plans have been made in the past to restore the massive structure, as roughly 90% of its outer walls still stand, it has so far remained a ruin due to lack of funding, but despite this is still magnificent to behold.
